He was well known for his detailed black-and-white drawings. Tenniel worked as a political cartoonist for a magazine called Punch. He joined the magazine in 1850. Later, he became its chief cartoonist in 1864. He drew over 2,000 cartoons for this publication. His art helped show the feelings of the British public.

Tenniel had a very specific way of working. He used a style with clear, precise outlines. This helped his drawings look dignified and strong. He also added many small details to his backgrounds. These details helped show a specific time and place. He even gave objects a sense of personality. For example, a chair in his art might look quite menacing. This skill made his scenes feel very real and alive.

His career began with many years of hard study. He was admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1842. He earned this spot by making many copies of sculptures. Tenniel often taught himself by drawing from life. He drew animals at the zoo in Regent's Park. He also drew actors in London theatres. He even studied costumes and armor at the British Museum. These studies helped him learn to love fine detail.

Tenniel is most famous for his work with Alice.

He drew 92 illustrations for Lewis Carroll's books. These included Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Carroll originally drew his own pictures. However, an engraver suggested using a professional artist instead. Tenniel's drawings became the main way people see these characters. Even the Mad Hatter is often imagined just as Tenniel drew him.

Many people still value Tenniel's great artistic achievements. In 1893, he was made a knight. This was the first time a cartoonist received such an honor. He lived a long life from 1820 to 1914. His work helped change how people viewed cartoonists. Today, his Alice drawings are still considered the best versions. You can even see his influence in large bronze statues.
