After his time as president, Adams did something special. He was elected to the House of Representatives. He was the only former president to do this. In Congress, he fought for the rights of others. He spoke against slavery. He also spoke for the rights of women and Native Americans. He died while working in Congress in 1848.

Before his presidency, he held several high-ranking roles. He was the eighth U.S. Secretary of State from 1817 to 1825. He also served as a minister to Great Britain, Prussia, and Russia. Later, he represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate. He was the son of John Adams and Abigail Adams. His father was the second president of the United States.
Adams grew up in a very international environment. 
His early career focused heavily on diplomacy. 

As Secretary of State, Adams reached the height of his diplomatic influence. 
Because there was no majority, the House of Representatives decided the winner. The House chose Adams for the presidency. This decision was controversial because Adams appointed Henry Clay as his Secretary of State. 
Adams lost the presidency in the election of 1828. Andrew Jackson won that election by a large margin.
In his later years, Adams used his legal and political skills to defend human rights. He fought to repeal the "gag rule" in the House. This rule had stopped members from debating petitions to end slavery. In 1841, he successfully defended enslaved people in the Amistad case before the Supreme Court.
