People often say his stories are addictive. This means they are hard to stop reading. He helped create a special style for The New Yorker magazine. Many of his stories were set in a place called Gibbsville. This place was based on his real home town. O'Hara wrote about social class and how people live. He often wrote about people who felt like outsiders. This was because his own family lost their wealth when he was young. He wanted to go to Yale, but he could not. This feeling stayed with him for his whole life. Some famous writers, like Ernest Hemingway, praised his work. Other critics were much harsher. They did not always like his personality. They also thought his books were too focused on certain topics. Even so, many people still study his work today. He was a very important part of American literature.
