This collection contained more than 3,000 animal specimens and many human preparations. In 1783, he moved to a large house in Leicester Square to arrange these items into a teaching museum. During this time, he acquired the skeleton of a man named Charles Byrne. This was done against Byrne's expressed wishes to be buried at sea. Hunter reportedly bribed a member of the funeral party to secure the remains. This skeleton remained a part of his collection for a very long time.

At the time, he believed these two conditions were caused by a single pathogen, or a biological agent that causes disease.
