At the time, he believed these two conditions were caused by a single pathogen, or a biological agent that causes disease. While this theory was later proven incorrect by the French physician Philippe Ricord 51 years later, Hunter's research was central to the medical debates of his era. He also championed specific treatments involving mercury and cauterization. Some legends suggest he even performed self-experimentation to test his theories. However, historical records suggest these experiments were likely performed on other people rather than himself.
Beyond his scientific work, Hunter's life had a significant impact on culture and history. His massive collection was eventually purchased by the government in 1799. This collection was given to the Company of Surgeons and is now preserved in the Hunterian Museum in London. His anatomical discoveries are still referenced today; for example, a part of the thigh is known as "Hunter's canal." Even literature has been touched by his life. His home in Leicester Square is said to have inspired the setting for Dr. Jekyll in Robert Louis Stevenson's famous novel.
