In this work, he used a "rule of greatest simplicity." This rule assumed that if two elements formed only one compound, the molecule contained one atom of each. This led him to suggest the formula OH for water. While we now know water is H2O, his method helped calculate atomic weights for other substances. He correctly predicted the formulas for the two oxides of carbon, CO and CO2.
Dalton was also a pioneering meteorologist who studied the atmosphere for decades. 
His interest in the atmosphere even led him to study mountains. Before airplanes or weather balloons existed, the only way to measure temperature at high altitudes was to climb. Dalton climbed mountains in the Lake District to measure temperature and humidity. He used a barometer to estimate the height of these peaks. Because official maps were not published for the region until the 1860s, Dalton was a leading authority on mountain heights. He often worked with Jonathan Otley, who used Dalton's measurements to check his own work.
Dalton also made significant contributions to the study of human biology. He and his brother both experienced color blindness. In 1794, Dalton communicated a paper regarding "extraordinary facts relating to the vision of colours." He suggested that a shortage in color perception was caused by discoloration in the liquid medium of the eyeball. While his specific theory was later disproven, he provided the first scientific description of the condition. In 1995, an examination of his preserved eyeball showed he had deuteranopia. This is a type of congenital red-green color blindness.
Dalton's early life was shaped by his Quaker upbringing in Eaglesfield, England. His father was a weaver, and the family faced financial difficulties. Dalton began working at age ten to support himself. His interest in science was sparked by Elihu Robinson, a local meteorologist and instrument maker.
