When Germany invaded France in 1940, he escaped to Casablanca and later moved to New York City. He died in New York on April 17, 1942, at the age of 71. In 1948, his remains were returned to France by the cruiser Jeanne d'Arc. He was given a national funeral, and his ashes were placed in the Panthéon in Paris, a place reserved for France's most distinguished citizens.
