Cockcroft's journey into science was full of hard work and study. He served in the British Army during the Great War as a signaller. After the war, he studied electrical engineering at Manchester Municipal College of Technology. He later won a scholarship to St John's College at Cambridge. There, he became a research student under the famous Ernest Rutherford. He finished his doctorate in 1928. This training helped him become a leader in the world of physics.
During the Second World War, Cockcroft used his skills to help his country. 

Cockcroft's work connected many different parts of science and life. He managed the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell. 

Sir John Douglas Cockcroft was a pioneering British experimental physicist. 
To achieve this feat, Cockcroft had to solve a complex problem of energy. He needed to move tiny particles, called protons, fast enough to penetrate a nucleus. He and Walton built a specialized device known as a Cockcroft–Walton generator.
The experiment required precise steps and specific materials. In March 1932, the team began bombarding lithium and beryllium targets with high-energy protons. They initially expected to see gamma rays, which are high-energy light particles. However, they found something else entirely. Following the work of James Chadwick, they realized they were actually seeing neutrons. They adjusted their focus to look for alpha particles instead. On April 14, 1932, Walton bombarded a lithium target and observed the expected results. This confirmed they had successfully split the nucleus, a discovery they quickly shared with the scientific community.
Cockcroft’s path to scientific greatness was shaped by both education and war. He was born in 1897 in Todmorden, England. During the Great War, he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. After the war, he studied electrical engineering at Manchester Municipal College of Technology. He later moved to St John's College, Cambridge, on a scholarship. There, he became a research student under the famous physicist Ernest Rutherford. Cockcroft completed his doctorate in 1928, focusing on the condensation of molecular streams. This rigorous training prepared him for his future leadership roles in physics.
During the Second World War, Cockcroft applied his expertise to national defense. He served as the assistant director of scientific research in the Ministry of Supply. His primary focus was the development and deployment of radar technology. 

In the years following the war, Cockcroft led major nuclear research projects. He directed the Montreal Laboratory in Canada, where he oversaw the development of the ZEEP and NRX reactors. He also helped establish the Chalk River Laboratories. Later, he became the director of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) at Harwell in England. Under his leadership, the GLEEP reactor became the first nuclear reactor to operate in western Europe on August 15, 1947. He also oversaw the British Experimental Pile 0 (BEPO) in 1948. His work at Harwell included frontier research into nuclear fusion, such as the ZETA program.
Cockcroft’s career was marked by both immense success and difficult challenges. While managing the Windscale reactors, he insisted they be fitted with chimney stack filters. Although some mocked this as "Cockcroft's Folly," the necessity of such safety measures was proven during the Windscale fire of 1957. Beyond the lab, he held significant academic positions. He was the first master of Churchill College, Cambridge, starting in 1959. He also served as the chancellor of the Australian National University from 1961 to 1965.
