Johannesburg is the most populous city in South Africa.

The city's rapid growth began with a massive gold rush. In June 1884, Jan Gerritse Bantjes discovered a gold reef. This occurred on the farm Vogelstruisfontein. This discovery triggered a rush of people to the area. The city was officially established in 1886.
Long before the gold rush, the land was inhabited by others. San hunter-gatherers used stone tools in this region. Evidence shows they lived there up to ten centuries ago. Later, Sotho-Tswana communities settled across the broader region. They built stone-walled towns and villages.
Early Johannesburg was often a rough and disorganized place.
In the 20th century, the city underwent massive structural changes. In 1917, the Anglo-American Corporation was founded here. This became one of the world's largest corporations. After the war, many Chinese workers stayed in the area. This helped create a local Chinese community. In the 1930s, major building projects began after South Africa left the gold standard. By the 1950s, the government imposed apartheid.
Soweto is one of the most historically significant areas in South Africa. It was designated a "blacks only" city until 1994. The township became the center of the 1976 Soweto Uprising. During this event, peaceful student protests were met with force. Many famous anti-apartheid leaders lived in Soweto. These included Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. In contrast, other areas were designated for different groups. Lenasia is home to many English-speaking Indo-South Africans. Sandton is known as "Africa's richest square-mile."
Today, Johannesburg is a massive and diverse urban center. The City of Johannesburg has a population of 5,538,596. The larger Metropolitan Municipality has 6,599,190 people.
