His musical career acted as a bridge between two major eras. He connected the Classical era to the Romantic era. Hummel was considered a virtuoso, which means a performer with exceptional technical skill. He was most famous for his work on the piano. His compositions helped shape the way musicians played the instrument in the nineteenth century. He was a central figure in the musical world of his time.

Hummel's life began in Pressburg, in the Kingdom of Hungary. This city is known today as Bratislava, Slovakia. He was an only child born to Johannes Hummel and Margarethe Sommer Hummel. His father was a violinist and a music teacher. Johannes worked for the orchestra of Count Grassalkovich and later directed music at the Pressburg Theatre. The family moved to Vienna around 1786 or 1787. In Vienna, his father became the music director at the Theater auf der Wieden. This environment allowed Hummel to begin his musical journey very early.

As a child prodigy, Hummel received instruction from the greatest masters of the age. At age eight, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began teaching him. Mozart provided Hummel with lessons and housing for two years at no cost. Hummel performed his first concert at age nine during one of Mozart's performances. He later traveled to London in 1790 to study with Muzio Clementi. Upon returning to Vienna, he studied with Joseph Haydn and Antonio Salieri. He also became friends with Ludwig van Beethoven. The two men performed together in Beethoven's orchestral work, *Wellingtons Sieg*.

Hummel held several prestigious professional positions throughout his career. In 1804, Haydn appointed him as the Konzertmeister for Prince Esterházy. He served the Prince for seven years total. After leaving that post, he served as Kapellmeister in Stuttgart from 1816 to 1818. He then became the Kapellmeister in Weimar from 1819 until his death in 1837.

His musical output was vast and included many different types of compositions. He wrote eight piano concertos, including the frequently performed Piano Concerto No. 5 in Ab, Op. 113. He also composed ten piano sonatas and eight piano trios. His work extended to other instruments as well. He wrote a mandolin concerto, a trumpet concerto, and a grand bassoon concerto. He was even a talented guitar player. He wrote many works for the guitar, ranging from opus 7 to opus 93. Interestingly, he did not write any symphonies.

Hummel's influence on piano technique was profound and lasting. In 1828, he published *A Complete Theoretical and Practical Course of Instruction on the Art of Playing the Piano Forte*. This book sold thousands of copies in just a few days. It introduced a new style of fingering and ornamentation. His teaching reached many famous musicians through his student, Carl Czerny. Czerny later taught the great virtuoso Franz Liszt.

Other famous composers like Frédéric Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn were also influenced by Hummel's style. Some music historians note similarities between Hummel's concertos and Chopin's works.

Despite his fame, Hummel's musical style eventually fell out of fashion. The rising Romantic era favored a more tempestuous and emotional style of playing. This was seen in the works of performers like Liszt. Hummel's disciplined and balanced Classical style began to seem old-fashioned to some. He spent his final years in partial retirement in Weimar.
