He lived during a time when the Dutch were fighting for independence from Spain. He was born in a place called Amersfoort in 1547. As a young man, he studied law at many different universities. He traveled through France and Italy to learn more. Later, he moved to The Hague to begin his work. He helped the people fight against the rule of King Philip II of Spain.

Johan was very good at managing many different tasks. In 1576, he became an official in Rotterdam. This job helped him gain a lot of influence. By 1586, he became the Land's Advocate of Holland. He held this great office for 32 years. He worked so hard that he was like a prime minister. He helped keep the country together during very difficult years. His leadership prevented the new republic from falling apart.

He also changed how the world does business. In 1602, he helped start the Dutch East India Company. This company combined many smaller trading groups into one large group. This group traded in the Far East for two hundred years.

Johan also helped create a way for people to own parts of a company. These parts are called shares. People could sell these shares at a stock exchange. This way of running a business is still used all over the world today.

As time passed, big disagreements began to happen. These fights were about religion and how much power each area should have. One group was called the Arminians, and Johan supported them. He believed in religious toleration, which means letting people practice differently. Another group was called the Gomarists, and they disagreed with Johan. A leader named Maurice of Nassau also became Johan's enemy. Maurice wanted more central power, but Johan wanted provinces to stay independent.

These arguments led to a very sad end for Johan. In 1618, he was arrested by order of the government. He was put on trial by a special group of twenty-four people. Many of these people were his enemies. He was not allowed to use his own papers for his defense. In May 1619, he was put to death in The Hague. Before he died, he said he was a good patriot. Born in Amersfoort in 1547, he was highly educated. He studied law at several universities. These included Leuven, Bourges, Heidelberg, and Padua. He traveled through France and Italy before settling in The Hague. His legal training prepared him for a long political career.

His rise to power was very steady. In 1576, he became the pensionary of Rotterdam. This role gave him membership in the States of Holland. He was known for his hard work and persuasive speech. On March 16, 1586, he became the Land's Advocate of Holland. He held this position for 32 years. He represented the States of Holland and West Friesland. Because of his influence, he acted like a virtual prime minister. He managed the many details of the young republic.

Van Oldenbarnevelt was a master of administration. He helped keep the United Provinces from collapsing. At that time, the provinces had many separatist tendencies. This means they often wanted to act alone. His leadership prevented them from being easily conquered by Spain. He worked closely with Maurice of Nassau. Maurice was the son of William the Silent. Maurice led the armies, while Van Oldenbarnevelt handled the politics. They worked together well for many years.

He also changed the world of global trade. In 1602, he helped found the Dutch East India Company, or VOC. This company combined several smaller trading groups into one. The VOC traded in the Far East for two centuries.

He also helped create a new business model. This model used joint stock ownership. This means people could buy shares in a company. They could sell these shares at a stock exchange. This system is still used by businesses worldwide today.

However, deep disagreements eventually split the nation. These conflicts were about religion and political power. Two religious groups emerged: the Arminians and the Gomarists. The Arminians, or Remonstrants, wanted religious toleration. Van Oldenbarnevelt supported this idea. The Gomarists disagreed and wanted a strict church synod. This religious tension grew into a political struggle. It pitted Van Oldenbarnevelt against Maurice of Nassau. Maurice eventually supported the Gomarists.

In 1617, the conflict reached a breaking point. Van Oldenbarnevelt proposed a bold political move. He wanted the province of Holland to raise its own local force. These soldiers were called waardgelders. He wanted them to keep the peace locally. The States-General disagreed with this plan. They wanted a national church synod instead. This created a massive rift between the provinces and the central government. Maurice of Nassau used his military power to stop this plan. He led troops to Utrecht to disband the local militias.

This political struggle ended in a sudden downfall. In August 1618, the States-General ordered Van Oldenbarnevelt's arrest. He was held in strict confinement. He was later brought before a special court of twenty-four members. Many of these judges were his personal enemies. He was not allowed to use papers for his defense. On May 13, 1619, he was executed in The Hague. His last words claimed he was a sincere patriot. His death marked a major turning point in Dutch history.
