He was the founder of the Satmar group. This group is a branch of Hasidism. He was born in 1887. Even as a young boy, he was very smart. At his bar mitzvah, he spoke for many hours. He studied the Talmud, which is a holy book.

Teitelbaum lived in many places. He served as a rabbi in several towns. In 1934, he became the chief rabbi of Satmar. He built a large school for his students. He had many followers who looked to him for guidance.

During World War II, things were very hard. Teitelbaum was arrested and sent to a ghetto. A ghetto is a crowded area where people were kept. Later, he was sent to a place called Bergen Belsen. He was part of a group that was sent to Switzerland. He survived this difficult time.

Many people still follow his ideas today. A town in New York is named Kiryas Joel to honor him. It is a place where his followers live together. He is remembered as a very strong leader for his people.
