He went to California in 1849. He wanted to find gold during the Gold Rush. He traveled with a large group of family members. His new wife was named Rosa Feliz.

Life in the mining camps was very rough. Many people treated the Mexican miners poorly. Some stories say men attacked Joaquin and his wife. These stories come from a famous book. Because of this, Joaquin became a legend. Some say he led a gang of men. They moved horses and robbed people. Others saw him as a hero.

California leaders wanted to stop the gang. They hired a group called the California Rangers. The leader was Harry Love. In 1853, the Rangers met a group of men. They said they killed Joaquin. They even showed a jar with a head inside.

People paid money to see it.

Many people did not believe the Rangers. Joaquin's sister said the head was not him. Later, a book about him inspired the hero Zorro.
