Jinan is the capital city of the Shandong province in East China.
The city is famously nicknamed the "City of Springs."

Human history in this region spans more than 4,000 years.

Jinan has also been a center for profound intellectual and religious development. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the area was divided between the states of Lu and Qi. The state of Qi even built portions of the Great Wall of Qi across Changqing County.
The city's administrative center has shifted many times throughout history. From the Zhou dynasty to the Western Jin dynasty, the main settlement was the "city of East Pingling" in modern-day Zhangqiu. During the Western Jin Dynasty, the center moved west to Licheng. This location remained the administrative heart until the Qing dynasty. In the modern era, the Lixia district became a major settlement. The name "Lixia" comes from the city's position at the foot of Mount Li, which lies to the south.
In more recent history, Jinan became a vital transportation and industrial node. The 19th-century northward shift of the Yellow River connected the city to the Grand Canal. This improved trade with northern Shandong and southern Hebei. The arrival of the German-built Jiaoji railway in 1904 and the Jinpu railway in 1912 cemented its role as a trade hub.
Today, Jinan is a premier destination for higher education. It hosts several major universities, including the University of Jinan and Shandong Normal University.
