Jiangxi is a large province found in the east of China.
The land in Jiangxi changes a lot depending on where you stand. The northern part is quite flat and sits at a lower altitude. However, the southern and eastern sides are much more rugged. These areas are filled with many hills, valleys, and mountain ranges.
History has shaped Jiangxi into a very strategic place for many years. Long ago, the Gan River valley was a main path for travel. It served as a bridge between the North China Plain and the south. This river corridor allowed trade and news to move easily through the mountains. During the Han dynasty, a place called Yuzhang Commandery was set up here. This was the first major area organized by a Chinese dynasty in the region. The name "Gan" even became a short way to talk about the province.
In more recent history, Jiangxi played a big role in China's politics. It was one of the first major bases for the Communist party. A famous event called the Nanchang uprising happened there on 1 August 1927. Later, the government of the Chinese Soviet Republic was started in Ruijin. This town is often called the "Former Red Capital." During hard times in the 1930s, the population dropped by 40 percent. By 1936, there were about 13.8 million people living in the province.
Today, Jiangxi is a place of many different people and resources. Most people are Han Chinese, but they speak many different languages. Gan Chinese is the main language, but some people also speak Hakka Chinese.

Jiangxi is an inland province located in eastern China. It spans from the Yangtze River in the north to hilly regions in the south. The province is surrounded by several other Chinese regions. It borders Anhui to the north and Zhejiang to the northeast. Fujian lies to the east, while Guangdong is to the south. Hunan sits to the west, and Hubei is to the northwest. This central position makes it a vital link in the country.
The geography of Jiangxi is defined by its varying altitudes and water systems. The northern half of the province is relatively low and flat. In contrast, the southern and eastern sections are much more rugged. These areas feature many hills and valleys interspersed with mountain ranges. Notable peaks include Mount Lu, the Jinggang Mountains, and Mount Sanqing. The highest point is Mount Huanggang in the Wuyi Mountains. It sits on the border with Fujian at an altitude of 1,694 meters.
Water plays a central role in the landscape and history of the region. The Gan River is the most important waterway in the province. It flows through the entire length of Jiangxi from south to north. The river eventually enters Lake Poyang in the north. This is the largest freshwater lake in China. Lake Poyang then emptes into the Yangtze River. The Gan River valley has historically served as a major north-south transport route. It provided a rare open corridor through the otherwise rugged southeastern mountains.
Because of this corridor, Jiangxi has been strategically important for centuries. It acted as a primary route for trade and communication. This path connected the North China Plain to the territory of modern Guangdong. During the Shang dynasty, the region was likely inhabited by the Baiyue people. Later, the state of Wu held the northern part of the province. Following the conquest by the state of Yue, the state of Chu took control. Eventually, the Qin dynasty established the Jiujiang Commandery in the area.
The Han dynasty brought significant administrative changes to the region. The Yuzhang Commandery was established during this era. It was named after the Yuzhang River, the original name of the Gan River. This name is why "Gan" is used as an abbreviation for the province. By the Western Jin dynasty, the area became its own division called Jiangzhou. During the Tang dynasty, the name "Jiangxi" emerged from the Jiangnanxi Circuit. This circuit was part of a larger division south of the Yangtze River.
In the 20th century, Jiangxi became a major center for political change. It served as one of the earliest bases for the Communist Party. The Nanchang Uprising occurred on 1 August 1927, starting the Chinese Civil War. Later, the Chinese Soviet Republic was established in Ruijin. This city is known as the "Former Red Capital." However, the period was also marked by great hardship. Military campaigns caused the population to drop by 40 percent. By 1936, the population was approximately 13.8 million people.
Today, Jiangxi is a diverse and resource-rich province. Most residents are Han Chinese, but the area is linguistically diverse. Gan Chinese is the primary language, though Hakka Chinese is also spoken.

Modern Jiangxi is organized into eleven prefecture-level divisions. Nanchang is the provincial capital and the most densely populated city.
