Becoming the emperor was a very surprising event. The previous ruler, the Zhengde Emperor, died without any children. Because of this, the government looked for a new leader. They chose Zhu Houcong because he was a close relative. However, there was a big problem with the law. The law said only sons of the Empress could rule. Since his mother was a concubine, his right to rule was not clear. To fix this, leaders wanted him to be adopted as a brother to the old emperor.

This disagreement became known as the Great Rites Controversy. The Emperor did not want to be adopted. He wanted to honor his biological parents instead. He believed his father deserved high imperial ranks. This fight lasted for about three years. Eventually, the Emperor won the argument. Many of his opponents were sent away or punished.

This showed that he wanted to make his own decisions. He did not want to just follow what the grand secretaries told him to do.

During his reign, the Emperor lived in a special place. He chose to live in the West Park in Beijing.

This park was west of the Forbidden City. He built many beautiful palaces and Taoist temples there. He wanted the park to look like a magical land. He surrounded himself with monks and trusted advisers. Some of these men were named Yan Song and Xu Jie. Later in life, he became very interested in alchemy. He drank potions made of minerals like mercury and lead. These substances were actually very harmful to his body.

Life in China was also changing in many other ways. In the north, the Mongols became a strong group under Altan Khan. They wanted more trade, but the Emperor refused. This led to raids near Beijing in 1550. In the southeast, pirates called Wokou attacked the coasts. Even with these hard times, the economy grew. People became better at farming and making goods. New ideas about how to think also became popular. These ideas helped shape the society of that time.

His personal name was Zhu Houcong. He reigned from 1521 to 1567. His rule was a period of significant political tension and social change. He is remembered for his unique approach to imperial authority and his personal interests. These interests eventually had a major impact on his health and his governance. His era, known as Jiajing, was named after a concept of admirable and tranquil leadership.

His path to the throne was unexpected and legally complicated.

The previous ruler, the Zhengde Emperor, died without an heir in April 1521. Zhu Houcong was the Zhengde Emperor's closest male relative. However, Ming succession laws were very strict. They stated that only sons of the Empress could inherit the throne. Because Zhu Houcong's mother was a concubine, his claim was considered illegitimate. To solve this, Grand Secretary Yang Tinghe proposed a plan. He wanted to adopt Zhu Houcong as the son of the Hongzhi Emperor. This would make him the younger brother of the deceased ruler.

This proposal sparked a major political conflict called the Great Rites Controversy.

The Emperor refused to be adopted. He believed his duty was to honor his biological parents. He wanted to elevate his father, Zhu Youyuan, to imperial rank. This dispute lasted for three years. The Emperor fought to assert his own judgment over the traditional advice of grand secretaries. By 1524, the Emperor had won the struggle. Many of his political opponents were either banished or executed. This victory established a more autocratic style of rule.

During his reign, the Emperor changed how the imperial court functioned.

He decided to live outside the Forbidden City in Beijing. In 1542, he moved to the West Park. This area was located west of the Forbidden City. He built a complex of palaces and Taoist temples there. He wanted the park to resemble the mythical Land of Immortals. He surrounded himself with a circle of loyal followers. This group included eunuchs, Taoist monks, and senior officials like Yan Song and Xu Jie.

In his later years, the Emperor became obsessed with finding immortality. He turned to the practice of alchemy.

He sent Taoist priests across China to find rare minerals. He believed these minerals could be used to create life-extending elixirs. However, these potions contained very dangerous substances. They included arsenic, lead, and mercury. These toxic elements caused serious health problems. It is believed that these substances may have shortened his life.

While the Emperor focused on his personal pursuits, China faced external threats. In the north, the Mongols were united under Altan Khan in the 1540s. The Mongols wanted more free trade with the Ming dynasty. The Jiajing Emperor refused these demands and tried to close the borders. He used fortifications like the Great Wall to stop them. In 1550, Altan Khan launched raids that reached the outskirts of Beijing. In the southeast, Wokou pirates also became a major problem. These pirates caused violence and instability along the coast throughout the 1550s.

Despite these conflicts, the Ming economy experienced notable growth. Agriculture, industry, and trade all continued to develop.

This economic prosperity even continued after the deadly 1556 Shaanxi earthquake. As the economy flourished, new ideas began to spread through society. The traditional Confucian interpretations of Zhuism began to change. Many people became interested in the more individualistic beliefs of the scholar Wang Yangming.
