In 1934, this area became an official Jewish region. The Soviet government wanted to create a home for Jewish people. They chose this spot for military and economic reasons. The land was very hard to live on. It had thick forests of pine and cedar. It also had many swamps.

Many Jewish people moved there to start new lives. They brought their own culture. They used a language called Yiddish. They made Yiddish films, books, and newspapers.

At its highest point in 1948, about 50,000 Jewish people lived there. This was one-quarter of all the people in the area. Since then, the number of Jewish people has gone down.
