Some people call him Reuel. Others call him Hobab. In Jewish tradition, he may have had seven different names. He was a priest and a shepherd. He was also the father of a woman named Zipporah.

Moses met Jethro in Midian. Moses helped Jethro's daughters at a water source. Because of this, Jethro welcomed him into his home. Moses married Zipporah and worked as a shepherd for 40 years. Later, Jethro went to meet Moses in the desert. He gave Moses advice on how to lead the people. He told Moses to let other people help with small tasks.

The Druze people have their own beliefs about him. They call him Shuayb. They believe he was a great prophet. They think he spoke directly to God. To the Druze, he is a very important ancestor. They visit his tomb at a place called Nabi Shuayb. They gather there each year to sing and dance.
