He was a key leader during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Jackson also served as a politician and an advocate for LGBTQ rights. He was a protégé of Martin Luther King Jr. and James Bevel. His work focused on racial equality and economic justice for many groups. He helped shape the social and political landscape of the United States through many decades of activism.

Jackson's early life was shaped by the era of Jim Crow segregation.

This system enforced racial separation in public spaces like buses and water fountains. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1941, he grew up facing these unfair practices. He attended Sterling High School, where he was elected student class president. After high school, he attended the University of Illinois on a football scholarship. He later transferred to North Carolina A&T, a historically black university. There, he played quarterback and was elected student body president. He graduated with a B.S. in sociology in 1964.

His career in civil rights began through direct work with established leaders. In 1965, he participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches in Alabama.

Martin Luther King Jr. eventually gave Jackson a leadership role in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). In 1966, Jackson was chosen to lead Operation Breadbasket in Chicago. This was the economic arm of the SCLC. Operation Breadbasket functioned as a job placement agency for Black workers. Jackson used this position to organize massive consumer boycotts. These boycotts pressured white-owned businesses to hire Black employees and support Black-owned firms.

Jackson's activism evolved into independent organizational leadership. After a leadership struggle within the SCLC, Jackson resigned in 1971.

He and his staff formed People United to Save Humanity, later known as Operation PUSH. This new organization aimed to improve economic opportunities for poor people of all races. Jackson sought to frame racial issues as economic class struggles. He believed that uniting different groups around economic needs would create a stronger movement. In 1984, he organized the Rainbow Coalition to support his political goals.

Jackson also entered the highest levels of American politics through presidential campaigns. In 1984, he ran for President of the United States. Although seen as a fringe candidate, he finished third for the Democratic nomination. He ran for the presidency again in 1988. During that election, he finished as the runner-up to Michael Dukakis. From 1991 to 1997, he served as a shadow senator for the District of Columbia. A shadow senator is a representative who works to advocate for the rights of the District. This role allowed him to represent D.C. during the Bush and Clinton administrations.

Throughout his life, Jackson maintained a massive public presence. He was a frequent critic of police brutality and conservative policies. From 1992 to 2000, he hosted the program *Both Sides with Jesse Jackson* on CNN.

He also engaged in international affairs and worked with various global leaders. His influence extended to social issues like LGBTQ rights and economic equity. He was widely regarded as one of the most influential African-American activists of his era.

Jackson's legacy is tied to the concept of racial and economic reconciliation. He often advocated for a closer relationship between Black citizens and the Republican Party. He believed that competition between parties could provide better alternatives for all people. His work with Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition helped bridge gaps between different social classes. By focusing on the "haves" and the "have-nots," he attempted to change the nature of political struggle. His life serves as a study in how organized economic pressure can drive social change.
