It sits in the sea near the coast of France. The island is the largest of the Channel Islands. Although it is close to the United Kingdom, it is not part of it. Instead, Jersey is a self-governing place called a Crown Dependency. This means it has its own laws and its own money.

The island is home to 103,267 people as of 2021. It also includes some small, empty islands and rocks nearby.

Jersey works like a small nation with its own way of doing things. It has a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy. This means King Charles III is the head of state. A person called the Lieutenant Governor represents the King on the island. The Chief Minister leads the government, while the Bailiff is the civil head. The States Assembly is where the laws are made. It is made up of 49 elected members. These include 12 constables and 37 deputies. The United Kingdom helps Jersey with its defence and international rules.

History has shaped the island in many ways. People have lived in Jersey since at least 12,000 BCE. Long ago, the island was part of Normandy. When the English kings lost mainland Normandy in 1204, Jersey stayed with the English Crown. Because it was between England and France, it saw many wars. People even built big forts like Mont Orgueil Castle to stay safe.

In the 1600s, a man named Sir George Carteret was given land in America. He named that land New Jersey, which is now a state in the USA.

During the Second World War, Jersey went through a very hard time. German forces occupied the island from July 1940 until May 1945. Many people chose to leave for the UK to stay safe. While the Germans were there, they built many fortifications. Food became very scarce because supplies from France were cut off. On May 9, 1945, the island was finally liberated. Now, people celebrate that day every year as Liberation Day.

Today, Jersey is a busy and modern place. Many people work in the finance industry or in tourism.

The political system of Jersey is a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. King Charles III serves as the head of state. Because the King is not a resident, a Lieutenant Governor represents him on the island. The civil head of the island is known as the Bailiff. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister leads the actual government. The legislature is called the States Assembly. This is a unicameral body, meaning it has only one house. It consists of 49 elected members: 12 connétables, who are heads of parishes, and 37 deputies.

Jersey operates with a high degree of self-determination. It manages its own fiscal, legal, and judicial systems. The United Kingdom government handles specific areas like defence and international representation. The UK also manages certain policy areas, such as nationality law. Jersey has its own distinct international identity. Its legal system is described as mixed or pluralistic. This is because it combines Norman customary law, English common law, and modern French civil law.

The history of Jersey is deeply connected to the relationship between England and France. Humans have lived on the island since at least 12,000 BCE. In the ninth century, the island was raided by Vikings. In 933, it was annexed to Normandy by William Longsword. When the English kings lost mainland Normandy in 1204, Jersey remained loyal to the English Crown. It never became part of the Kingdom of England, but it remained a possession of the Crown. This position at the frontline of Anglo-French Wars led to the building of fortifications like Mont Orgueil Castle.

During the 17th century, Jersey played a role in the history of North America. In the 1640s, King Charles II lived in exile on the island. To thank Vice Admiral Sir George Carteret for his help, the King granted him land in the American colonies. Carteret named this land New Jersey. This area is now a state in the United States. Later, in the 19th century, the island saw a cultural shift. The growth of the tourism industry brought many English residents to the island. This led to a more anglicised culture, though the Norman-French roots remained strong.

Jersey experienced significant hardship during the Second World War. Nazi German forces occupied the island from 1 July 1940 until 9 May 1945. Before the occupation, 6,500 residents chose to evacuate to the UK. During the occupation, the Germans built many fortifications using slave labour. Supplies from France were cut off after the D-Day landings, making food very scarce. A resistance cell was eventually formed by the Jersey Communist Party. The island was finally liberated on 9 May 1945. Today, this date is celebrated as Liberation Day.

Modern Jersey has a diverse economy and a unique cultural blend. The island has a large financial services industry.

Agriculture and tourism are also important sectors. While English is the main language, the historic Norman-French dialect, Jèrriais, is still part of the culture. You can see this on signs at the airport.
