Jerry Lewis was a prolific American entertainer and humanitarian.
Lewis was born Jerome Levitch on March 16, 1926, in Newark, New Jersey. His parents were both involved in the entertainment industry. His father, Daniel Lewis, was a vaudevillian and master of ceremonies. His mother, Rachael Levitch, was a pianist for the WOR radio station. During his youth, Lewis showed an early interest in performance. By age 15, he developed a "Record Act." In this act, he mimed lyrics to songs while a phonograph played. He worked several odd jobs, including a soda jerk and a theater usher, to support himself.
His rise to stardom began with a famous partnership with singer Dean Martin. They met in 1945 at the Glass Hat Club in New York City.
As a duo, Martin and Lewis produced sixteen buddy-comedy films at Paramount Pictures. These included titles like "At War with the Army" and "The Stooge." They also appeared on the weekly "Colgate Comedy Hour" on NBC. Their popularity was so great that DC Comics published "The Adventures of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis." However, the partnership ended in 1956 after a final nightclub performance at the Copacabana. The split left Lewis in a state of personal crisis. He later recalled feeling completely unnerved to be working alone.
Lewis successfully transitioned into a solo career through music and film.
Lewis's humanitarian work was perhaps his most significant long-term contribution.
Throughout his life, Lewis received numerous prestigious honors for his work. He was awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
