She is a neo-conceptual artist, which means she focuses on ideas. Her work is often found in public spaces where many people can see it. She uses large billboards and bright electronic signs to share her messages. You might also see her words on stone benches or street posters. This way, her art becomes part of the world around us. She wants people to notice and think about the words they see.

Holzer has many different ways of showing her work. She often uses LED signs, which are electronic displays that use light. These signs can scroll, flash, or repeat words over a long time.

She also uses light projections on big buildings. Sometimes she makes art with stone, video, or even sound. She once even put her words on a race car for BMW. She likes to use only capital letters in her text. This helps her speak with a sense of urgency and loudness.

Holzer began her journey in art quite a long time ago. She was born on July 29, 1950, in Gallipolis, Ohio. She studied painting and drawing at several different colleges. In 1976, she moved to Manhattan to study more. During this time, she worked as a typesetter for a newspaper. This job helped her learn how to work with text. Her early work included the "Truisms" project from 1977 to 1979. She printed these short statements on paper and pasted them to walls.

Her career has brought her many important honors and awards. In 1990, she won the Leone d'Oro at the Venice Biennale in Italy.

This is a very famous art prize. She was also given the Time 100 Award in 2024. Many colleges have given her honorary doctorates for her hard work. Her art has been shown in many famous places. This includes the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Her work is now kept in many museum collections around the world.

Holzer's art connects to the way we see information every day. Her scrolling LED signs look like news tickers or advertisements.

This makes people wonder about the messages they see in public. She also uses her art to talk about important human feelings. Some of her series, like "Laments," use the voices of people who have died. She uses these voices to talk about life, death, and sorrow. By using words in public, she makes big ideas feel very close to us.
