Voice acting is a unique discipline that requires intense focus on vocal control. Instead of using physical movement to convey emotion, an actor must use pitch, tone, and breath. Hale often performs many different roles within a single project. For example, in the series Totally Spies!, she voiced both the smart protagonist Sam and her rival Mandy. This requires the actor to create distinct identities that do not sound alike. She also provides the sounds for Samus Aran in Metroid Prime, using grunts and screams to signal movement or damage. This helps the player feel the character's physical experience.

Hale's career includes a massive variety of character types and genres. In the Mass Effect series, she voices the iconic Commander Shepard. This role earned her multiple nominations, including at the 2010 and 2012 Spike Video Game Awards. She also voices Jean Grey for Marvel media and several Disney Princesses, such as Cinderella and Aurora. In the Star Wars universe, she has voiced characters like Bastila Shan and Jedi Grand Master Satele Shan. Her range allows her to play everything from a heroic leader to a villain like Kronika in Mortal Kombat 11.

Her professional journey began with small steps in the United States. As a teenager, she earned $35 for a voice-over spot at a local radio station. After graduating from the Alabama School of Fine Arts in 1982, she attended Birmingham-Southern College. There, she earned a business degree but realized her true passion was film acting. Her first major breakthrough occurred in 1988 with the television movie A Father's Homecoming. She later moved to Los Angeles to pursue more consistent work in the entertainment industry.

The scale of her influence is reflected in the numbers of her career. She was once one of approximately 6,000 girls selected for a nationwide search for the soap opera Santa Barbara. Her coaching program, Skills Hub, utilizes 89 experienced coaches to train new voice actors. In the Mass Effect 2 community, her character Shepard gained massive popularity. Although only 18% of players initially chose a female Shepard, the number rose to 32% in the Legendary Edition. This fan support even led to an email campaign to place her character on a game cover.

Hale's background is also a significant part of her identity. She was born in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and is a member of the NunatuKavut people. She identifies as having partial southern Labrador Inuit descent. Her biological father, James Learning, was a prominent elder and environmental activist. This heritage is a core part of her personal history. She has used her platform to support her family during difficult times, such as when her father faced legal challenges regarding environmental activism in 2017.

Despite her immense success, Hale maintains a unique relationship with fame. She often speaks about the value of being "invisible" or "untraceable" as a performer. She believes that if she performs her role perfectly, the actor disappears. This allows the player to feel like the true star of the story. By staying anonymous, she can enjoy public spaces like Comic Con without being recognized. This philosophy ensures that the audience's connection to the character remains the most important element of the experience.
