Monnet spent many years working in finance and banking. He moved to America in 1925 to work at a bank in New York. He later helped stabilize money in countries like Poland and Romania. When World War II began, Monnet worked hard to help the Allies. He helped organize supplies for soldiers in both Britain and France. He moved to Washington, D.C., to advise President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He helped persuade the United States to produce many weapons for the war. Some people say his coordination work helped the war end a year sooner. He even helped negotiate a large deal to clear debt for France in 1946.

After the war, Monnet wanted to make sure Europe stayed peaceful. He created the Monnet Plan to help France rebuild its economy.

During World War I, Monnet developed ideas about resource coordination. He believed that Britain and France needed to combine their war efforts. In 1914, he met with French Premier René Viviani to discuss this. While he struggled to organize economic cooperation at first, his ideas eventually took hold. By the end of 1917, groups like the Allied Maritime Transport Council were active. These efforts helped coordinate the resources needed for the war.

In the years between the wars, Monnet worked in international diplomacy and finance. He served as the Deputy Secretary-General of the League of Nations starting in 1919. He left the League in 1922 because he believed more could be done. Monnet then moved to New York to work in banking. He later helped stabilize the currencies of Poland and Romania. When World War II began, Monnet focused on organizing war supplies. He advocated for a union between France and Britain to increase their strength. After France was invaded in 1940, he worked closely with Charles de Gaulle. Monnet later moved to Washington, D.C., to advise President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He helped persuade the United States to become a massive producer of weapons. He famously argued that it was better to have too many tanks than too few. Some experts believe his coordination work shortened the war by one year.

Following the war, Monnet focused on the reconstruction of Europe. In 1946, he helped negotiate the Blum–Byrnes agreement. This deal cleared a $2.8 billion debt for France. It also provided France with a $650 million low-interest loan. To help France rebuild, he led the General Planning Commission. This effort was known as the "Monnet Plan." It used a method called indicative planning to modernize the economy.

This plan focused on efficiency and modern management practices.

Monnet's greatest legacy was his vision for a united Europe. He believed that individual European states were too small to ensure prosperity alone. He argued that they must form a federation or a common economic unit. This vision led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community. His work helped move Europe away from national protectionism and toward cooperation. In 1976, he became the first person named an Honorary Citizen of Europe.
