He was a poet, playwright, novelist, designer, film director, visual artist, and critic. Because he mastered so many different creative fields, some called him a "Renaissance man." This term describes someone with many different talents. While he worked in many media, he insisted on calling himself a poet. He viewed his poems, novels, plays, drawings, and films as different forms of poetry. His work was highly influential on avant-garde movements like Surrealism and Dadaism.

Cocteau's career involved constant collaboration with other famous creators. In 1912, he worked with Léon Bakst on a production called Le Dieu bleu. During World War I, he served as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross. This experience allowed him to meet famous artists like Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani. In 1917, the impresario Sergei Diaghilev asked Cocteau to write a scenario for a ballet. This resulted in the ballet Parade. The production featured music by Erik Satie and sets by Picasso.

This teamwork helped Cocteau become a central figure in the Parisian art scene.

His personal life included significant struggles that shaped his literary output. Cocteau was born in Maisons-Laffitte to a prominent Parisian family. His father, a lawyer and painter, died by suicide when Cocteau was nine years old. Later in life, Cocteau struggled with an addiction to opium. He documented his recovery in a book titled Opium: Diary of a Cure, published in 1929. This book used pen-and-ink illustrations to show his experiences with drug withdrawal. The process of weaning himself off the drug profoundly changed his writing style. He even wrote his notable book, Les Enfants Terribles, during a strenuous period of recovery.

Cocteau's work in theater and literature established his early fame. He published his first volume of poems, Aladdin's Lamp, when he was nineteen. In the 1920s, he was known in artistic circles as "The Frivolous Prince." He wrote several important plays, such as La Machine infernale in 1934. This play was a stage version of the Oedipus legend and is considered his greatest theatrical work. He also wrote the libretto, or the text for a musical work, for Igor Stravinsky's opera Oedipus rex in 1927. His novels, such as Les Enfants Terribles, also gained great popularity.

In the film industry, Cocteau was an influential avant-garde director.

He directed several films that introduced new ideas to French cinema. His films The Blood of a Poet (1930), Orpheus (1950), and Testament of Orpheus (1960) are known as the Orphic Trilogy. He also directed the famous film Beauty and the Beast in 1946. These films helped influence the upcoming French New Wave genre of filmmaking. His ability to combine visual art with moving images made him a successful filmmaker.

During the Nazi occupation of France, Cocteau navigated a complex political landscape. He claimed his politics were non-existent, but he held strong views on pacifism and antiracism. He signed a petition against antisemitism and racism in 1940. However, he was once part of a group of intellectuals who met during the occupation. This led to him being arraigned on charges of collaboration after the war. He was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing. Records show he used his connections to try to save friends during this difficult time.

Cocteau's artistic legacy extends into design and religious art. In 1945, he helped design sets for the Théâtre de la Mode, a fashion exhibition.

He also decorated a marriage hall in Menton in 1957. His diverse body of work remains a subject of study for its variety of expression. From drawings to massive film productions, Cocteau's influence remains visible in modern art.
