Jean-Claude Duvalier was a leader of Haiti. He took power in 1971. He was only 19 years old then. His father, François Duvalier, had been the leader before him.

During his rule, many things changed in Haiti. Many people lived in deep poverty. Some people in the government took a lot of money. A group called the "dinosaurs" held much power. Duvalier also lived a very rich life. He had a wedding that cost two million dollars.

Life was hard for many people. In the 1980s, hunger became a big problem. In 1985, people began to protest. They wanted the government to change. This was a large uprising. In 1986, Duvalier fled the country. He went to live in France.
