This way of running a country is sometimes called Colbertism.

Colbert used many steps to change how France worked. He helped start new industries to make things like glass and cloth. He even founded a royal mirror factory in 1665. This helped France stop buying glass from other places like Venice. He also helped the navy grow by becoming the Secretary of State of the Navy in 1669.

To help trade, he worked to improve roads and canals. One famous project was the Canal du Midi. He also helped the French East India Company reach new markets.

Colbert's rise to power happened through hard work and clever moves. He was born in Reims, France, to a family of merchants. Before he was twenty, he already had a job in the war office. A leader named Mazarin recommended him to King Louis XIV. After Mazarin died in 1661, Colbert gained even more influence. He became the Controller-General of Finances to manage the nation's money. He even took over after a man named Nicolas Fouquet was arrested for stealing money.

Many important facts define his long career in the government. He issued more than 150 laws to regulate different groups of workers. In 1666, he suggested starting the Academy of Sciences to help people study the world.

He also helped build the Paris Observatory. Colbert was a member of the Académie française for many years. He died on September 6, 1683, after serving the king for a long time. His son, the Marquis de Seignelay, later took over his role in the navy.

Colbert's work connects to how modern countries manage their money today. He believed that a country should sell more than it buys. This idea is a part of something called mercantilism. He also showed how leaders can use art and science to make a nation look great. By supporting artists and scientists, he helped make France a center for culture. Even though wars eventually made the country poor again, his reforms changed France forever.
