In 1794, the United States and Great Britain signed a deal. It was called the Jay Treaty.

John Jay helped lead the talks. The goal was to stop a war. It also helped the two lands trade goods. This kept things peaceful for ten years.

The treaty fixed many old problems. Britain agreed to leave forts in the Northwest Territory. These forts were in places like Michigan and New York. Britain also paid money for ships they had taken.

Some people used a new way to solve fights. They used arbitration. This means neutral people help settle a dispute. This set a path for other nations to follow.

But the treaty made many people angry.

Thomas Jefferson and his group did not like it. They favored France instead of Britain. This fight helped create the first two political parties in America. One group was called the Federalists. The other was the Democratic-Republicans. The treaty helped shape how these groups worked for a long time.
