Jawaharlal Nehru was a very important leader in India.

Nehru's life changed as he grew up. He was born in 1889 in Allahabad, India. His father, Motilal Nehru, was a famous and wealthy lawyer. Jawaharlal went to school in England at Harrow School. Later, he went to Trinity College in Cambridge. He studied natural science and then studied law. He became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer.
Nehru joined the Indian National Congress to fight for freedom.

India finally gained independence on 15 August 1947.

Nehru also helped India talk to other countries. During the Cold War, there were two main groups of nations. Nehru led the Non-Aligned Movement to stay neutral. This meant India did not join either of those two groups. He was a very busy leader who loved many things. He even enjoyed playing with tiger cubs at his home.
Jawaharlal Nehru was a central figure in the history of 20th-century India. He was an anti-colonial nationalist, a secular humanist, and a statesman. This means he was a leader who worked to free India from foreign rule. He also believed in secularism, which is the idea that a nation should treat all religions equally. As a social democrat, he sought to create a fairer society. Nehru served as India's first prime minister for 16 years after independence. His leadership helped shape India into a modern, democratic nation.
Nehru's journey began with a privileged childhood in Allahabad, India. He was born on 14 November 1889 to Motilal Nehru and Swarup Rani. His father was a wealthy and prominent barrister. Jawaharlal grew up in a large mansion called Anand Bhavan. He was educated at home by private tutors before moving to England. He attended Harrow School and later Trinity College, Cambridge. At Cambridge, he earned an honours degree in natural science in 1910. He then moved to London to study law at the Inner Temple.
After becoming a barrister, Nehru returned to India in August 1912. He began practicing law at the Allahabad High Court. However, his interest in law was soon replaced by political passion. He joined the Indian National Congress, a major political party. He rose through the ranks to become a leader of its progressive faction. A turning point occurred when he met Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi became a mentor and named Nehru his political heir. In 1929, as Congress president, Nehru demanded complete independence from the British Raj.
Nehru's fight for freedom led to many difficult years. He was a key figure in the non-cooperation movement. Because of his political activities, he was imprisoned eight different times. Between 1921 and 1945, he spent over nine years in detention. One notable period was his time at Ahmednagar fort from 1942 to 1945. During World War II, the political landscape of India changed significantly. The Muslim League, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, became more dominant. This led to intense political competition regarding the future of the nation.
India finally achieved independence on 15 August 1947. Nehru became the first prime minister of the Dominion of India. On that historic day, he delivered his famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech. He raised the Indian flag at the Red Fort in Delhi. On 26 January 1950, India became a republic. Nehru remained prime minister during this transition. He led the country through a period of massive social and economic reform. He promoted a multi-party democracy and focused on science and technology.
In international relations, Nehru played a very important role. During the Cold War, the world was divided into two main ideological blocs. Nehru did not want India to join either side. He helped lead the Non-Aligned Movement to keep India neutral. This allowed India to maintain its own path in global affairs. His leadership helped the Congress party win major elections in 1951, 1957, and 1962. He was also a respected author of many books. His works, like "The Discovery of India," are still read globally.
Nehru's legacy continues to influence India today. He was a man of many interests, from politics to literature. He even enjoyed spending time with nature, such as playing with tiger cubs. He died in office from a heart attack in 1964. In honor of his life, his birthday is celebrated as Children's Day in India. His work helped establish the foundations of the modern Indian state.
