Java has a very long and interesting history. Many famous events in Indonesia happened on this island. It was once the center of strong Hindu-Buddhist empires. Later, it was home to Islamic sultanates. The island was also a key part of the Dutch East Indies. During the 1930s and 1940s, Java was the center of the struggle for independence. People have lived here for a very long time. Scientists found fossils called "Java Man" near the Solo River.

The island was formed through a process called geologic subduction. This happens when the Australian Plate moves under the Sunda Plate. This movement created a long chain of volcanic mountains. These mountains form an east–west spine across the island. There are 112 volcanoes on Java in total. Of these, 35 are active volcanoes. Mount Semeru is the highest volcano on the island. Mount Merapi is the most active volcano in all of Indonesia.
