It is known for its high skill and careful craft. People around the globe now seek it out for its unique flavors. In Japan, it is a source of great pride. Many distilleries even offer tours and museums for visitors. This makes the making of whisky a part of local culture. It helps small towns grow through tourism and new jobs.

Making this drink follows a careful, step-by-step way.

First, makers use malted barley to start the process. They use large copper pots called pot stills to distill the liquid. Then, the spirit must age inside wooden casks. Some makers use ex-bourbon or sherry casks for flavor. Others use a special Japanese oak called mizunara. This wood gives the drink a scent like a temple.

It can smell like sandalwood, mint, or even coconut.

The history of this craft began in the early 20th century.

Makers studied Scotch whisky techniques from Scotland to learn the way. A man named Masataka Taketsuru is a very important figure. He studied in Scotland at the Longmorn and Hazelburn distilleries. He returned to Japan in 1920 to share his knowledge. He helped build the Yamazaki distillery in a suburb of Kyoto. Later, he started the Nikka company in 1934.

Today, the industry is growing very fast.

In the early 2000s, only a few distilleries were active. By the mid-2020s, there were over 50 producers in Japan. There are even more than 100 distillery sites in operation. Large companies like Suntory and Nikka still lead the way. However, many new small craft distilleries are opening too. New rules in 2021 also help define what is truly Japanese whisky.

Japanese whisky has many links to everyday life.
