In February 1946, actress Norma Shearer was vacationing at a ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains. While in the lobby, Shearer noticed a photograph of an eighteen-year-old girl. The photo had been taken by the girl's father during the Christmas holiday. Shearer found the face in the photograph fascinating. She showed the image to Lew Wasserman, a talent agent at MGM. Based on this photograph, Leigh secured a contract despite having no prior acting experience. She then began training under drama coach Lillian Burns.

Her early professional years involved various roles and name changes.

For her film debut in The Romance of Rosy Ridge (1947), her name went through several versions. The studio first tried "Jeanette Reames," then "Janet Leigh," and then her birth name, "Jeanette Morrison." They worried "Janet Leigh" might be confused with actress Vivien Leigh. However, her co-star Van Johnson preferred the name "Janet Leigh." She eventually used that name professionally. Before her film success, she also performed on radio. She appeared on the radio drama anthology The Cresta Blanca Hollywood Players in 1946.
