Jan van Riebeeck was a Dutch merchant and colonial administrator. He served as the first Commander of the Cape from 1652 to 1662. This settlement eventually became a major part of South Africa. His work helped establish a way station for the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, also known as the Dutch East India Company or VOC. The VOC was a powerful group that managed global trade.

Van Riebeeck was born in Culemborg on April 21, 1619. He was the son of a surgeon and grew up in Schiedam. He joined the VOC in 1639 and held several different positions. He worked as an assistant surgeon in Batavia in the East Indies. He also managed a VOC trading post in Tonkin, Indochina. In 1643, he traveled to the VOC outpost at Dejima in Japan. Later, in 1650, he proposed a plan to sell South African animal hides to Japan.

In 1651, the VOC requested that van Riebeeck lead a new settlement. He departed from Texel on December 24, 1651. He arrived at Table Bay on April 6, 1652, with two ships named the Drommedaris and Goede Hoope. A third ship, the Reijger, arrived the next day. He brought 82 men and 8 women with him. His wife, Maria de la Queillerie, was part of this group. The fleet originally had five ships, but two arrived late. These ships, the Walvis and the Oliphant, had experienced 130 burials at sea during the voyage.

The primary goal of the settlement was to create a refreshment station. This station sat on the trade route between the Netherlands and the East Indies. Many sailors died on these long voyages. The station provided fresh food to keep the crews healthy. Van Riebeeck began by building a fort named Fort de Goede Hoop. This structure was made of mud, clay, and timber. It featured four corners known as bastions. Later, the Castle of Good Hope was built to replace this fort.

Van Riebeeck led a systematic effort to introduce new plants to the Cape Peninsula. He planted cereals, grapes, ground nuts, potatoes, apples, and citrus fruits. These plants changed the natural environment and the local economy forever. In 1659, he established a vineyard to produce red wine. This was intended to help combat scurvy, a disease caused by a lack of nutrition. He also owned a farm called Boschheuwel. He advised the VOC to buy this farm when he left the Cape in 1662.

Throughout his time at the Cape, van Riebeeck kept detailed daily diary entries. These records provided a basis for studying the natural environment and its resources. His diaries suggest he learned much from the indigenous Khoi people. He also reported scientific discoveries, such as the comet C/1652 Y1, which was spotted on December 17, 1652. He eventually left the Cape and died in Batavia on January 18, 1677. Batavia is known today as Jakarta.

Van Riebeeck remains a figure of immense historical significance in South Africa. Many Afrikaners consider him the founding father of their nation. For a long time, his image appeared on many postage stamps and banknotes.

While some holidays like Van Riebeeck's Day were cancelled after 1994, his legacy is still visible. Statues of him and his wife stand on Adderley Street in Cape Town. The coat of arms for Cape Town is based on his family coat of arms. Many towns and streets still carry his name today.
