He worried that his intense focus on tiny things might be a distraction from God. However, his scientific work continued, and he eventually viewed his research as a tribute to the Creator.
Swammerdam died prematurely in 1680 at the age of 43. His most massive work, *Biblia naturae*, was not published until 1737. This was done posthumously by the professor Herman Boerhaave.
