He also identified that drones were the males and had no stingers. He described worker bees as being closer to the female nature, though he could not find ovaries in them. These findings corrected many errors held by scientists for centuries.

In the field of physiology, Swammerdam studied how muscles work. At the time, many followed the ideas of Galen or René Descartes. They believed in a theory involving "animal spirits." This theory suggested that nerves were hollow tubes. They thought these spirits flowed into muscles to make them move. People believed muscles must get larger when they contract because of this fluid. Swammerdam designed a clever experiment to test this. He placed a severed frog thigh muscle inside an airtight glass syringe filled with a little water.

When he irritated the nerve to make the muscle contract, he watched the water level. The water level did not rise, which proved no fluid or air was flowing into the muscle. This helped move science toward understanding that behavior is based on stimuli.

Swammerdam's life was marked by deep study and personal struggle. He was born on February 12, 1637, in Amsterdam. His father was an apothecary and a collector of fossils and insects.

Although his father wanted him to study theology, Swammerdam studied medicine at the University of Leiden. He earned his doctorate in 1667 with a dissertation on respiration. He traveled to France to study at the scientific academy of Melchisédech Thévenot. In 1669, he published his major work, *Historia insectorum generalis*. This book summarized his studies of insects from France and the area around Amsterdam.

His career faced difficulty when his father withdrew financial support after the publication of his insect book. This forced Swammerdam to practice medicine occasionally to pay for his research. He even obtained permission to dissect bodies from a hospital in Amsterdam. He also experienced a religious crisis in the 1670s. He briefly followed a mystic named Antoinette Bourignon. He worried that his intense focus on tiny things might be a distraction from God. However, his scientific work continued, and he eventually viewed his research as a tribute to the Creator.

Swammerdam died prematurely in 1680 at the age of 43. His most massive work, *Biblia naturae*, was not published until 1737. This was done posthumously by the professor Herman Boerhaave.
