In 1932, he wrote that there must be considerable amounts of invisible matter in space. A scientist named Fritz Zwicky later called this "dunkel Materie," or dark matter. Today, scientists believe dark matter makes up about 84.5% of the total mass in the universe. Its gravity helps pull stars into galaxies and connects galaxies into long strings.

After the war, Oort continued to push the boundaries of science. In 1951, he worked with Hendrik van de Hulst on a major project. They successfully detected a specific radio emission from interstellar hydrogen. This was a breakthrough for radio astronomy. This 21-centimeter emission could pass through gas clouds without being absorbed. This allowed astronomers to see the central region of our galaxy for the first time. Before this, thick clouds of gas had hidden the center from optical telescopes. Oort's work helped reveal a huge concentration of mass at the heart of the Milky Way.
