Small planes land on a gravel path. This helps people visit the island. It is a very lonely place.
Jan Mayen is a volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean. It is part of Norway. The island sits northeast of Iceland and east of Greenland.
The island has two main parts. One part is Nord-Jan. The other part is Sør-Jan. A wide strip of land joins them. This strip has two large lakes.
A huge volcano sits in the north. Its name is Beerenberg. It is the highest point on the island. It is also an active volcano.
No one lives here all the time. Only workers stay on the island. They work for the military or to study the weather. Most people stay in a place called Olonkinbyen. In the winter, only 18 people live there. The number grows to about 35 in the summer.
Small planes land on a gravel runway. There are no ports for big ships. Ships must anchor far from the coast. The waters around the island have many fish.
Jan Mayen is a lonely volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean. It belongs to the Kingdom of Norway. The island sits northeast of Iceland and east of central Greenland. It is also northwest of Vesterålen in Norway.
The island has two main parts called Nord-Jan and Sør-Jan. A wide strip of land called an isthmus joins them together. This is where you can find the two largest lakes. These lakes are named Sørlaguna and Nordlaguna. There is also a third lake called Ullerenglaguna.

History tells us that Dutch explorers found the island long ago. During the Golden Age of discovery, many ships sailed these waters. In 1614, three different Dutch expeditions arrived in the summer. One captain was named Jan Jacobszoon May van Schellinkhout. The island was eventually named after him. Other explorers tried to claim they found it earlier. However, the most certain records come from those Dutch whaling ships.
No one lives on Jan Mayen permanently. Only a small group of workers stays there. They live in a settlement called Olonkinbyen. These people work for the Norwegian military or for weather stations. In the winter, only 18 people stay on the island. This number grows to about 35 people during the summer.
Even though it is empty, the island is very important. The waters around it have many fishing resources. Norway manages a large area of sea around the island. This area is called an exclusive economic zone. Scientists have also found many minerals under the sea nearby. They found things like copper, zinc, gold, and silver. Some even think there is petroleum and natural gas below the seafloor.
Jan Mayen is a volcanic island located in the Arctic Ocean. It is an integral part of the Kingdom of Norway. Geologists classify this island as a microcontinent. This means it is a small piece of continental crust. The island was formed by the Jan Mayen hotspot. A hotspot is a place where magma rises from deep within the Earth.
The island has a distinct shape and structure. It is long, stretching from the southwest to the northeast. Jan Mayen consists of two main parts. The larger part is called Nord-Jan in the northeast. The smaller part is called Sør-Jan in the south. A wide isthmus connects these two sections. An isthmus is a narrow strip of land. This area contains the two largest lakes on the island. These are named Sørlaguna and Nordlaguna. A third lake, Ullerenglaguna, is also located here.
Jan Mayen is a very mountainous and icy place. The highest point is the Beerenberg volcano. It sits in the northern part of the island. Beerenberg is the northernmost subaerial active volcano in the world. Subaerial means the volcano is above the surface of the water. Much of the island is covered by glaciers. These massive ice sheets cover the area around the Beerenberg volcano.
The history of the island involves many different explorers. During the Golden Age of Dutch exploration, many ships mapped unknown areas.
There is no permanent population on Jan Mayen. Only specific personnel live there for work. They reside in a settlement called Olonkinbyen. These workers belong to the Norwegian Armed Forces or the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. The population changes with the seasons. During the winter, only 18 people stay on the island. In the summer, the population grows to about 35 people. These workers perform heavy maintenance during the warmer months. They serve for six months or one year at a time.
Transport to the island is quite difficult. There are no ports or harbors for ships. Ships must use offshore anchorages instead. The island has one unpaved airstrip called Jan Mayensfield. C-130 Hercules military planes fly from Bodø Main Air Station. These planes land on a gravel runway. Pilots must have good visibility to land safely. The airport lacks instrument landing capabilities. This means planes sometimes must return to Norway without landing.
Jan Mayen is economically important due to its surroundings. Norway has managed an exclusive economic zone around the island since 1980. This zone covers more than 250,000 square kilometers. The area contains important fishing resources. Scientists have also found mineral deposits along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. These minerals include copper, zinc, cobalt, gold, and silver. Some estimates suggest there could be 21.7 million tonnes of copper. There are also high concentrations of lithium and scandium. Experts suspect petroleum and natural gas may lie below the seafloor.
