He is widely celebrated as the "national painter" of Poland. His work focused on history painting, which uses art to depict significant historical events. Through his large-scale oil paintings, he captured nodal moments in the Polish past. These works were more than just pictures. They served to promote Polish history and national identity. This was vital because Poland was partitioned and lacked political autonomy during his life.

Matejko's process involved creating massive, complex scenes. He used oil paints to build detailed layers of color and texture. He often depicted many figures in a single composition to tell a story. His art moved beyond simple illustration to become a form of moral commentary. For example, his 1862 painting *Stańczyk* shows a court jester reflecting on political matters. He also created a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form. These were detailed portraits intended to preserve the image of Polish leaders.

He also produced numerous portraits of individuals and royalty. Another significant type of work was his decorative murals. He painted these on the walls of St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków.

He studied under notable artists like Wojciech Korneli Stattler. Later, he received scholarships to study in Munich and Vienna. He eventually returned to Kraków to establish his own studio.

His career saw both great struggle and immense success. Early on, he was a "starving artist" who struggled with debt. He famously sold his painting *The Shuyski Tsars* for only five florins. However, his fortunes changed as his reputation grew. His painting *Skarga's Sermon* won a gold medal at the 1865 Paris Salon. This success led to international recognition. He received the French Légion d'honneur for his work.

Matejko's influence extended far beyond the canvas. He was deeply involved in the Polish cause during the January Uprising of 1863. Although poor health prevented him from fighting, he donated his savings. He also personally transported arms to an insurgent camp. He later became the director of the art academy in Kraków.
