He was born on April 10, 1512, at Linlithgow Palace. His father was King James IV and his mother was Margaret Tudor. James became king in 1513 after his father died in the Battle of Flodden. At that time, James was only seventeen months old. Because he was so young, he could not rule by himself.

This meant other people had to make decisions for the country.

For many years, different leaders called regents ruled in his place. First, his mother Margaret served as the regent. Later, a man named John Stewart, the Duke of Albany, took over. Albany was James's second cousin and arrived with French soldiers. The young king lived in places like Stirling Castle and Holyroodhouse. During this time, he had tutors to teach him French and Latin.

He also learned to sing, even if his voice was a bit harsh. Life was not always easy for the young king during these years.

James eventually took control of his own kingdom in 1528. Before this, he had been kept by Archibald Douglas, the 6th Earl of Angus. Angus was a nobleman who kept the king like a prisoner for two and a half years. Once James escaped, he took strong action against the Douglas family. He sent Angus away and took back royal lands.

James also worked to make the king's income much larger. He did this by controlling royal estates and collecting taxes and fees.

James was a king who liked grand things and important connections. He used his position to marry two women from France. His first wife was Madeleine of Valois, and his second was Mary of Guise.

He also loved the arts and spent a lot of money on them. He built beautiful homes in styles like High Gothic and Renaissance.

One such place was the lovely Falkland Palace. He even founded the College of Justice in 1532 to help with the law.

Some people called James the "poor man's king." This was because he was easy for regular people to talk to. He often acted against people who were being unfair to the poor. However, other people thought he was a very harsh leader. They felt he was too worried about his power and his wealth.
