It sits near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. A water path called the Prince Gustav Channel separates it from the mainland. For a long time, an ice shelf joined the island to the land. That ice collapsed in 1995. Now, boats can sail through the channel.

The island has many parts. A tall mountain called Mount Haddington is in the middle. You can find many bays and points along the coast. Some places have large glaciers. These are rivers of ice that move slowly.

This island is a very special place for science. It is one of only three places in Antarctica with dinosaur fossils. Scientists found the first Antarctic dinosaur here in 1986. It was called Antarctopelta oliveroi. It was a medium-sized dinosaur. Later, they found bones for a large runner. This dinosaur was named Imperobator antarcticus. It was about the size of a Utahraptor. Many people visit to study these old bones and the land.

It sits near the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Prince Gustav Channel separates the island from the Trinity Peninsula. To the north, Vega Island sits across the Herbert Sound. You can also find Seymour Island and Snow Hill Island to the southeast. The island is part of the James Ross Island group.

For a long time, an ice shelf connected the island to the mainland. This ice shelf collapsed in 1995. Now, the Prince Gustav Channel is passable for ships.

The landscape of the island is very diverse. A high mountain called Mount Haddington sits in the center. The island has many different coastal features. There are wide bays like Markham Bay and Röhss Bay. You can find many points and capes along the edges. Some areas have steep cliffs, such as the Förster Cliffs. There are also many glaciers, which are large rivers of ice. The Swift Glacier is one of the most active glaciers on the island.

People have been exploring this area for a long time. A British expedition led by James Clark Ross arrived in 1842. They discovered and charted many points on the eastern side. Later, the Swedish Antarctic Expedition arrived in 1903. Otto Nordenskiöld led this group and charted the island. He named the island after Sir James Clark Ross. The name "James" Ross Island is used to avoid confusion with another Ross Island. Today, the Mendel Polar Station is located on the island.

This island is a very important place for finding fossils. It has two formations that hold dinosaur bones. These are the Santa Marta Formation and the Snow Hill Island Formation. These are two of only three known places in Antarctica with dinosaur fossils. In 1986, geologists found the first Antarctic dinosaur here. It was a medium-sized ankylosaur named Antarctopelta oliveroi. In 2019, scientists named a large runner Imperobator antarcticus. This dinosaur was about the size of a Utahraptor.

Many different scientists have studied the island's history. They have found many types of dinosaurs in the rocks. One group found an ornithopod named Trinisaura santamartaensis in 2008. Another researcher found an iguanodontid named Morrosaurus antarcticus. The name Morrosaurus comes from the El Morro site on the island. Researchers also study the volcanic rocks at Flett Buttress. This rock crag provides the highest exposure of volcanic rock on the island. Each discovery helps us learn more about the ancient past.

It sits off the southeast side of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Prince Gustav Channel separates the island from the Trinity Peninsula to the northwest. To the north, Vega Island sits across the Herbert Sound. Other nearby islands include Seymour Island and Snow Hill Island to the southeast. The island is part of the larger James Ross Island group.

For a long time, the island was connected to the mainland by an ice shelf. This ice shelf acted like a bridge of frozen water. In 1995, this ice shelf collapsed. This event made the Prince Gustav Channel passable for the first time. This change allows ships to move through the channel between the island and the peninsula. Today, the Mendel Polar Station serves as the first Czech Antarctic Base on the island.

The landscape is dominated by Mount Haddington. This high mountain surmounts the central part of the island. The island features many different types of terrain and coastal shapes. There are wide bays, such as Markham Bay and Röhss Bay. There are also many glaciers, which are slow-moving rivers of ice. The Swift Glacier is a steep glacier and is one of the most active on the island.

Exploration of the island began in the 19th century. A British expedition led by James Clark Ross arrived in 1842. They discovered and charted several points along the eastern side of the island. Later, the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (SwedAE) charted the island in October 1903. This expedition was led by Otto Nordenskiöld. He named the island after Sir James Clark Ross. To avoid confusion with the more famous Ross Island in McMurdo Sound, the name "James" Ross Island is used.

James Ross Island is a world-class site for paleontology, the study of ancient life. It contains two dinosaur-bearing formations from the Upper Cretaceous period. These are the Santa Marta Formation and the Snow Hill Island Formation. These are two of only three known formations in Antarctica that contain dinosaur fossils. In 1986, Argentinian geologists Eduardo Olivero and Roberto Scasso found the first Antarctic dinosaur here. They discovered Antarctopelta oliveroi, a medium-sized ankylosaur. This dinosaur was found in the Santa Marta Formation south of Santa Marta Cove.

Many other dinosaur species have been identified through careful research. In 2003, U.S. paleontologist Judd Case and geologist James Martin found theropod bones on the Naze Peninsula. This theropod, named Imperobator antarcticus in 2019, was a large runner. It was about the size of a Utahraptor. In 2008, paleontologists Rodolfo Aníbal Coria and Juan José Moly found an ornithopod named Trinisaura santamartaensis. Additionally, the iguanodontid Morrosaurus antarcticus was named after the El Morro site. These discoveries provide vital clues about life in ancient Antarctica.

Geologists also study the island's unique rock structures. Flett Buttress is a rock crag that rises northwest of Mount Haddington. It provides the highest exposure of volcanic rock on the island. Other notable features include the Förster Cliffs, which run east-west in the north. There is also the Watchtower, an isolated and steep-sided rock mass.

These geological features help scientists understand the volcanic and biological history of the region. The island remains a critical location for understanding both Earth's crust and its ancient ecosystems.
