Hill was a very hard worker. He started by working with steamboats and coal. Later, he helped save a failing railroad. He grew it into a huge business. He was known as "The Empire Builder." This was because his tracks helped many people move West. He sold cheap land to new farmers. He even helped build schools and churches for them.

His biggest success was the Great Northern Railway.

It ran from Minnesota all the way to Seattle. It was the first big railroad built without using public money. To find the best path, Hill rode a horse to scout the land. He even found a hidden mountain pass called Marias Pass. This helped his trains travel more easily. By the time he died in 1916, he was very wealthy.
