He held many important jobs in the United States government. He served in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He was even a judge on the Supreme Court. Later, he served as the Secretary of State. He also became the governor of his home state. His life shows how one person can hold many different roles in a country.

Byrnes started his career working in a law office. At age 14, he worked as a court stenographer. This means he wrote down everything people said in court. To get a job as a clerk, he even changed his birth date. He wanted to be 21 so he could work for a judge. He studied the law and became a lawyer in 1903. This hard work helped him win his first election to Congress in 1911.

In the Senate, Byrnes was a close friend of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He helped pass many laws known as the New Deal. These laws were meant to help the country during the Great Depression. Byrnes worked hard to bring money to South Carolina for big projects. One major project was a huge dam called Santee Cooper. This dam helped control flooding and provided electricity to the whole state.

Byrnes had a very short time on the Supreme Court. President Roosevelt appointed him to the court in 1941. However, the United States joined World War II very soon after. The President asked Byrnes to join the executive branch instead. He served on the Court for only one year and 87 days. This makes him the shortest-serving justice in the history of the Court. During the war, he led offices that helped manage the nation's economy.

After the war, Byrnes helped President Harry S. Truman. He became the Secretary of State in July 1945.
