Bryan Matthew Sevilla, known professionally as James Deen, is an American former pornographic actor and director. He became a prominent figure in the adult film industry starting in 2004. Deen was recognized for a specific look that differed from industry norms. He had a relatively slender build and lacked tattoos. This gave him an "everyman" appeal that attracted a wide audience.

Deen's career was marked by several professional milestones and industry honors. In 2009, at age 22, he won the AVN Male Performer of the Year award. This made him the youngest actor to ever receive that specific honor. He also gained a significant following among teenage girls. One fan even compared his appeal to the actor Ryan Gosling. In 2013, he was the only male performer included on the CNBC Dirty Dozen list of popular stars.

Beyond acting, Deen participated in various media and business ventures. He hosted a web series called "James Deen Loves Food," where he reviewed restaurants. He also used the crowdfunding site Kickstarter to fund a steampunk Western film titled "Cowboys & Engines." This campaign was highly successful, raising over $100,000 in only 58 days. The project included actors such as Malcolm McDowell and Richard Hatch. Deen even launched a clothing brand named Baby Panda through his own online store.

Deen was also active in industry advocacy and public speaking. He joined the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee, known as APAC. This organization works to protect performer rights and review health and safety protocols. Deen served as the Treasurer and later as the Chairperson of APAC. He also engaged with the public through digital platforms. In 2014, he participated in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session. He received more than 4,000 questions in one hour, making it one of the site's most popular events.

His professional life involved significant technological and mainstream crossover attempts. In 2013, he collaborated on the first adult video production recorded with Google Glass. The censored trailer for this project reached one million views on YouTube within 24 hours. He also appeared in the 2013 film "The Canyons," written by Bret Easton Ellis. Deen also engaged in political discussions regarding industry regulations. In 2012, he joined a press conference to oppose Los Angeles County Measure B. This measure would have required the use of condoms in the industry.

In late 2015, Deen's career faced a major turning point due to serious allegations. Multiple women, including his former girlfriend Joanna Angel and performer Stoya, came forward with accusations. These allegations included sexual misconduct, rape, and physical abuse. Stoya's public claims in November 2015 led to widespread discussion. Deen denied these allegations, calling them false and defamatory.

The consequences of these allegations were immediate and widespread. Several major companies, including Kink.com and Evil Angel, severed all ties with him. They stated that consent is sacrosanct within their operations. Deen resigned from his position as chairman of APAC in December 2015. In 2016, his production company was fined $77,875 by California authorities. This fine was for violating safety laws regarding condom usage and safety record disclosure. These events raised questions among sociologists and journalists about accountability within the adult industry.
