Hepburn was very good with words. He worked with an assistant named Kishida Ginkō. Together, they made a Japanese–English dictionary in 1867. This book helped many students learn the language.

He used a special way to write Japanese words. This way uses the Latin alphabet. We call this the Hepburn romanization. His big book made this system very popular. He also helped translate the Bible into Japanese. In 1905, Japan gave him a special honor. It was called the Order of the Rising Sun. He was only the second foreigner to get it.
