He also oversaw the introduction of co-educational classes, allowing women to enter Harvard Medical School and Harvard Law School for the first time. 
During World War II, Conant’s influence moved into the realm of national security and high-stakes science. In 1941, he became the chairman of the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC). In this role, he oversaw vital projects, including the development of synthetic rubber and the Manhattan Project. 

After the war, Conant transitioned into international diplomacy and public service. In 1953, he retired from Harvard to serve as the United States High Commissioner for Germany. His task was to oversee the restoration of German sovereignty following the conflict. He later served as the U.S. Ambassador to West Germany until 1957. Throughout his later years, he remained a dedicated communicator of science. He wrote several books to explain the scientific method to the general public and criticized the state of the American education system in various published works.
