James Rufus Agee was a versatile American writer and critic. He worked as a novelist, journalist, poet, and screenwriter. He also served as an influential film critic during the 1940s. Agee used his writing to explore deep human experiences and social realities. His work spanned many different media, from magazine articles to movie scripts. Today, he is remembered as a significant figure in American literature. His reputation grew greatly after his death in 1955.

Agee's writing process often involved intense, direct observation of the world. In 1936, he spent eight weeks in Alabama for a Fortune assignment. He lived among sharecroppers to document their daily lives. This experience resulted in his famous book, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. He worked with photographer Walker Evans to capture these lives. Agee used fictional names in that book to protect the identities of his subjects. A different manuscript from this trip, titled Cotton Tenants, was published in 2013. This text used the subjects' original names and provided a different view of his work.

His career included several distinct professional stages. He began as a reporter for Fortune magazine from 1932 to 1937. Later, he worked at Time, where he reviewed up to six books per week. In 1941, he transitioned into a prominent film critic role at Time. He also spent several years writing for The Nation between 1942 and 1948. As a freelancer, he wrote articles for Life Magazine and developed movie scripts. These roles required him to shift between journalistic reporting and creative storytelling.

Agee's early life in Tennessee shaped much of his later writing. He was born in Knoxville in 1909 to Hugh James Agee and Laura Whitman. When he was six, his father died in an automobile accident. This loss became a central theme in his later autobiographical novel. He attended several boarding schools, including Saint Andrews School for Mountain Boys. At this school, he met Father James Harold Flye. Flye became a lifelong mentor and a close spiritual confidant. Their correspondence was eventually published as a collection of letters.

Agee achieved significant literary success through specific, impactful works. His novel, A Death in the Family, was published in 1957. This book won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1958. It was based on the circumstances of his father's death. Another major work, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, is now considered a masterpiece. Although it initially sold only 600 copies, it is highly valued today. The New York Public Library includes it among the greatest literary works of the 20th century. His film criticism was also highly regarded by peers and scholars.

His work as a screenwriter involved complex collaborations and challenges. He is credited on the respected films The African Queen and The Night of the Hunter. There was historical controversy regarding his role in The Night of the Hunter. Some believed the director, Charles Laughton, wrote the script. However, a 293-page draft discovered in 2004 proved Agee's significant contribution. Laughton had required Agee to cut the script in half to make it filmable. This shows how Agee's original vision was much longer and more detailed.

Agee's influence extends into many other artistic fields. His writing has inspired various musical compositions and operas. The composer Samuel Barber used Agee's prose for his work Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Aaron Copland created the opera The Tender Land based on Agee's book. Additionally, the poem "Sure On This Shining Night" from his poetry was set to music by several composers. Even modern television creators, like David Simon, have cited his journalism as an influence. His life and words continue to connect different forms of art together.
