Zuma's path to the presidency involved significant political conflict. In 2005, President Mbeki dismissed Zuma from his deputy position. This happened after Zuma's financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, was convicted of making corrupt payments. Zuma was also charged with corruption related to a R30-billion defense package called the Arms Deal. 

During his presidency, Zuma implemented several economic policies. He announced a policy called "radical economic transformation" in 2017. This included attempts at land expropriation without compensation. He also promoted free higher education. He worked to increase black economic empowerment requirements. On the global stage, he focused on South-South cooperation. This means strengthening ties between developing nations. He helped bring South Africa into the BRICS grouping. He was also noted for his policies regarding HIV/AIDS.
However, his second term faced intense scrutiny and controversy. In 2014, the Public Protector found he used state money for his Nkandla home. In 2016, the Constitutional Court ruled he failed to uphold the Constitution. There were also serious allegations of "state capture." This term describes how the Gupta family allegedly gained corrupt influence over his administration. 

Since leaving office, Zuma has faced continued legal battles. The National Prosecuting Authority reinstated corruption charges against him in 2018.
