Jack's work inspired many famous and important people. The famous bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger said that all health clubs started with Jack. Schwarzenegger even served on a fitness council with him. When Jack was 70 years old, he showed his incredible strength. He towed 70 boats through Long Beach Harbor while wearing handcuffs.
Francois Henri "Jack" LaLanne was an American fitness and nutrition pioneer.
LaLanne's transformation began during his difficult teenage years. As a boy, he struggled with behavioral issues and health problems like headaches and bulimia. He described himself as a "sugarholic" who was addicted to junk food. His life changed at age 15 after hearing a lecture by Paul Bragg. Bragg was a health food pioneer who spoke about the dangers of meat and sugar. This lecture inspired LaLanne to undergo a total lifestyle change. He began eating raw vegetables, nuts, and whole bread to improve his health. He even had to eat lunch alone on football fields to avoid judgment from peers.
After his personal transformation, LaLanne became a professional athlete and entrepreneur. He was a successful wrestler, winning the American Athletic Foundation Wrestling Championship in 1930. In 1936, he opened the first modern health club in Oakland, California. At that time, many doctors actually warned patients to avoid his gym. They feared that weightlifting would make people "muscle-bound" or cause medical issues. Despite this opposition, LaLanne continued to advocate for supervised weight training. He eventually expanded his influence, and his European Health Spas grew to over 200 locations. He later licensed his health club models to the company Bally.
LaLanne was also a prolific inventor who created tools used in gyms today. He designed several pieces of equipment that became industry standards. These included leg extension machines, pulley machines using cables, and weight selectors. He is specifically credited with inventing the original model of the Smith machine. Beyond heavy machinery, he developed resistance bands to help people build strength. He marketed these to women as the "Glamour Stretcher" and to men as the "Easy Way." He also produced protein supplement drinks, protein bars, and electric juicers to support nutrition.
Television provided the platform for LaLanne to reach a massive audience. He hosted "The Jack LaLanne Show," which became the longest-running nationally syndicated fitness program. The show began in 1953 as a local 15-minute program in San Francisco. By 1959, it was broadcast across the entire country.
LaLanne was famous for his extraordinary feats of physical strength. Even as he aged, he maintained an incredibly active lifestyle. At age 70, he performed a remarkable demonstration of power in Long Beach Harbor. While wearing handcuffs and shackles, he towed 70 boats through the water. These boats carried a total of 70 people over a distance of one and a half miles. This event highlighted his belief in the power of physical discipline. He continued to lift weights consistently throughout his entire life.
His influence reached even the highest levels of government and celebrity. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former Governor of California, called him an "apostle for fitness." Schwarzenegger noted that LaLanne inspired billions of people to live healthier lives. Because of his contributions, LaLanne was appointed to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. He was also inducted into the California Hall of Fame.
