Jack St. Clair Kilby was a famous American electronics engineer. He changed how we use technology every single day. He is best known for helping create the integrated circuit. This invention is what we often call a microchip.

Before his work, electronic machines were very large. They needed many separate parts connected together. This made building new devices a very hard job. Kilby found a way to make things much smaller.

In 1958, Kilby worked at a company called Texas Instruments. He wanted to solve a problem called the "tyranny of numbers." This meant that using too many separate parts was difficult. He decided to make all the parts on one piece of material. He used a material called germanium for his first try.

On September 12, he showed his idea to his bosses. He used a tool called an oscilloscope to prove it worked. The tool showed a continuous sine wave on its screen. This proved his tiny circuit could actually function.

Kilby was born on November 8, 1923, in Missouri. He grew up in Great Bend, Kansas. He went to school at Great Bend High School. Later, he studied electrical engineering at two different colleges. He earned a degree from the University of Illinois in 1947. He also earned a degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1950.

His hard work in school helped him become a great inventor. His hometown even has signs to remember him.

Kilby had many important patents for his many inventions. He filed for his first integrated circuit patent in 1959. He also helped invent the handheld calculator. He worked with Jerry Merryman and James Van Tassel on that. He also helped create the thermal printer.

For his amazing work, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000. He also received the National Medal of Science from Richard Nixon. He won many other awards like the IEEE Medal of Honor. These honors show how much he helped the world.

Today, we see the results of his work everywhere. Most modern gadgets use microchips to work. Think about the small computers inside your favorite toys. Think about the screens on phones or tablets.
