He competed in the ring from 1914 to 1927. During this time, he held the world heavyweight championship from 1919 to 1926. People often called him "The Manassa Mauler" or "Kid Blackie." Dempsey was an iconic athlete of his era. He was ranked sixth on The Ring magazine's list of all-time heavyweights. He also ranked fourth among the Top 100 Greatest Punchers. In 1950, the Associated Press even voted him the greatest fighter of the previous 50 years.

Before he became a champion, Dempsey lived a very difficult life.

He was born in Manassa, Colorado, in 1895. He was one of 13 children in a family with very little money. Because his father struggled to find work, the family moved often. Dempsey left home at age 16 to find work. He was an itinerant laborer, which means he traveled to take different jobs. He hitched rides on freight trains by holding onto the rods beneath the cars. He worked as a ditch digger, fruit picker, and timber cutter. He even worked as a circus roustabout.

His professional boxing career began through a clever trick by his brother, Bernie.

In the fall of 1914, Bernie was supposed to fight a veteran named George Copelin. However, Bernie did not want to fight because Copelin had trained with the champion, Jack Johnson. Bernie decided to substitute his brother, Jack, into the match instead. The promoter was very angry about the switch. Even though Dempsey was much smaller than Copelin, he won the fight. He knocked Copelin down six times in the first round and twice in the second. This victory earned him a $100 purse.

In 1919, Dempsey achieved his greatest success by winning the world heavyweight title.

He fought Jess Willard, a man known as the "Pottawatomie Giant." Willard was much larger, weighing 245 pounds compared to Dempsey's 187 pounds. Dempsey knocked Willard down seven times in the very first round. This intense fight led to many rumors and controversies. Some people claimed Dempsey used "loaded gloves" to increase his power. They suggested his manager, Jack Kearns, used plaster of Paris on the hand wraps. However, witnesses and historians, including Nat Fleischer, stated these claims were not true.

Dempsey was also a pioneer in the business of sports. He helped transform boxing into a massive commercial success. In 1921, his fight against Georges Carpentier generated the first "million-dollar gate" in boxing history. That match earned $1,789,238. This surpassed his own 1919 record of $452,522.10 set against Jess Willard. Later, in 1927, Dempsey participated in a rematch with Gene Tunney. This fight drew the sport's first two-million-dollar gate. These numbers showed how much interest the public had in his matches.

Throughout his career, Dempsey faced many different types of opponents. He fought notable boxers like Fireman Jim Flynn and Gunboat Smith. He also faced Sam Langford, whom Dempsey called the greatest fighter ever. Dempsey's career included many knockout victories. In 1918 alone, he fought 17 matches and won 15 of them. He was known for his ability to win matches very quickly. In 1919, he won five consecutive regular bouts by knockout in the first round. This ability to end fights early made him a superstar.

He was also honored by the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1980. Finally, he joined the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. His life connects the era of traveling laborers to the era of modern professional sports. He remains a symbol of how skill and fame can change a person's life. His story is a major part of American athletic history.
