sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Jürgen Schult is a legendary German track and field athlete. He specialized in the discus throw. This event requires immense strength and precise technique. Schult became a central figure in the sport for decades. He held the men's world record in the discus from 1986 until 2024. This achievement made him one of the most enduring record holders in athletics history.

To succeed in the discus throw, an athlete needs specific physical traits. During his active career, Schult stood 1.93 meters tall. He also weighed 110 kilograms. These measurements provided the power necessary for elite competition. He trained with several experts to refine his skill. These included Dr. Hermann Brandt and Thomas Schult. Schult also represented the SC Traktor Schwerin club.

Schult's career spanned many different political eras. He began as an athlete representing East Germany. He won every East German championship from 1983 until 1990. However, he missed the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This happened because East Germany participated in a boycott of those games. Later, he competed for a reunified Germany. This transition marked a major change in his professional life.

His competitive history includes many significant international results. In 1979, he won first place at the European Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He threw 56.18 meters during that event. In 1986, he set his famous world record. He surpassed the previous mark held by Soviet athlete Yuriy Dumchev. Schult's record-breaking throw reached a distance of 68.82 meters.

Schult achieved great success at the Olympic Games. He won the gold medal in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. During the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, he won a silver medal. He also competed in the 1996 Atlanta Games and the 2000 Sydney Games. Even at age 40, he reached the Olympics in 2000. He finished in eighth place in that final Olympic appearance.

The longevity of his world record is truly remarkable. His mark stood for 37 years and 9 months. This duration surpassed the 25 years and 79 days of Jesse Owens' long jump record. It was one of the longest-standing men's records ever. Finally, Mykolas Alekna broke the record in 2024. This ended a period of dominance that lasted nearly four decades.

Beyond his time as a competitor, Schult transitioned into coaching. He earned a degree in sport to prepare for this role. In 2002, he became the trainer for the German track and field association. He specifically coached the men's discus team. This allowed him to pass his expertise to the next generation. He remains a significant figure in the history of German athletics.
