His journey began in Split, Croatia, where he was born on April 1, 1979. Both of his parents, Stjepanka and Žarko Balić, were professional handball players. After he was born, the family moved to Italy for his father's career. They lived in Rovereto and Prato before returning to Split when Balić was seven years old. Interestingly, he did not start with handball. He originally played basketball for KK Split. It was not until 1995 that a coach named Mate Bokan suggested he try handball.
